THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

April 22, 2016

We would like to thank you for your interest in NEWBuildS.

As you may know NEWBuildS formally completed its mandate on September 14, 2015. NEWBuildS has supported over 70 highly qualified personnel. Over 60 PhD and MSc theses are expected from its research program. Numerous technical reports, theses, technical notes, presentations and technical articles are posted on NEWBuildS web site to allow access to these valuable information by building designers, industry, code officials and researchers. Essentially the NEWBuildS web site has served an effective knowledge dissemination function. We are pleased to inform you that FPInnovations has kindly agreed to provide resources to maintain and update the NEWBuildS web site until at least March 2017.

We will continue to update the contents as new theses, reports and technical articles arising from NEWBuildS supported projects are available.

Sincerely,
Y. H. Chui, Scientific Director

Knowledge Transfer to Support Wood Building and Design
The latest research into design and construction of mid‐rise and taller wood buildings will be the topic of this educational one‐day event, providing you with an opportunity to be among the first to learn from thought‐leaders and academics who lead our industry.

As the NEWBuildS Network enters its final year of operation, some of the research outcomes from the network and its partners are being implemented to facilitate design and construction of mid‐rise and taller wood buildings. NEWBuildS is a multi‐disciplinary strategic research network for engineered wood‐based building systems and consists of 13 Canadian universities, FPInnovations, the National Research Council and the Canadian Wood Council.

Co‐hosted by Wood WORKS! BC, Symposium 2015 will focus on projects that have either been implemented or are of interest to early adopters. The outcomes cover structural, fire and building envelope performance of wood buildings. Presentations will focus on state‐of‐the‐art design information that is either in the process of being implemented or could be implemented in future editions of design standards and building and fire codes. NEWBuildS Principal Investigators, scientists from FPInnovations and the National Research Council and engineers from the building industry will be presenting at this informational and inspirational event.

NEWBuildS & FPInnovations HQP Tall Building Design Project – Sept 20, 2013

NEWBuildS & FPInnovations are pleased to announce the new demonstration design project of a high-rise wood building.

The project objective is to execute the design process of a high-rise wood building by a team of professional experts, NEWBuildS researchers and FPInnovations researchers in their respective areas of expertise. The expected impact is to establish a process and procedure on how to expedite the technology transfer from research results to actual building design, a process and procedure not well practiced in North America using existing state-of-the-art knowledge gathered from NEWBuildS projects and FPInnovations programs.

The professional experts are Mr. Robert Drew, Perkins + Wills, Architect; Mr. Eric Karsh, Equilibrium Consulting Engineers and Mr. Andrew Harmsworth, GHL Consultants. The consulting team will develop the specifications, including geometry, location and specific needs, of a high-rise building.

The design team will consist of PDFs and graduates with focus on Structural engineering, Seismic and vibration, Fire engineering, Building envelope (including durability and thermal performance), Building acoustics and Life cycle assessment (CA).

The design process and procedures will be based on the new FPInnovations’ Tall Wood Building Guide.

The first meeting of the Design Project will take place on September 20, 2013 at FPInnovations in Vancouver, BC.

This project is jointly funded by NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) and BC FII (Forestry Innovation Investment).
